This isn t to say you can install laminate over every tile floor.
The question is can i install a wood floor over the tile.
Some conditions apply but most are easily addressed.
Although installing tile over a wood floor is slightly more complicated than installing tile directly over concrete the project can be completed with a little bit of work and a few extra steps.
But a number of precautions must be taken to ensure a successful installation.
If the hardwood flooring is composed of narrow boards with a very smooth flat surface you could leave the flooring in place and screw cement backer board down on top of it before applying the tile.
Vinyl flooring can be installed directly over ceramic and porcelain tile flooring.
Cracked or missing tiles should be fixed or filled in.

You shouldn t tile directly over hardwood flooring since it can expand contract and cup due to seasonal changes in temperature and humidity.

Sand the wood floor make sure it s thoroughly clean and dry until it s as smooth and even as possible with no bumps or rough areas.

If the tile floor has wide or deep seams use an underlayment rather than installing the vinyl directly on the tile.
While most floor tile these days is installed onto a layer of cement board or similar backerboard it is possible to lay tile directly over plywood.
This underlayment height coupled with the 3 4 inch thickness of the flooring itself would make the new floor too thick.
Wide seams between the tiles can create slight depressions in the vinyl flooring.

One situation however does require more work and may call for removal of the tile.
If so make sure the floor is solid and well sealed.
This type of wood ranges from 5 16 to 5 8 of an inch thick and won t create a height problem.
Still you may need to tile directly over an existing hardwood floor for instance to avoid raising the floor level significantly relative to an adjacent floor.
You ll probably need to go over it several times starting with heavier grit sandpaper and progressing to lighter.
Engineered wood flooring on the other hand can be glued directly to the existing ceramic.
To install ceramic tile over wood the wood surface must be structurally sound enough to support the weight of the tile.
